Syntax

The nBIG is hierarchically organized into gallery collections, categories (tissue classes), sub-categories (all three implemented as albums), and images. The syntax of anatomic image naming is related to the image content, view, appearance and labeling, and includes a gallery collection (G), tissue class (category) and/or sub(sub)-category (T), image distinguished by its view (V), mono- (M) or multi-color (C), label (L), and optionally special case (S). Consequently, the nBIG anatomic image naming is as follows:

  • Gn.Tn.Vn.Cn.Sn.Ln.text

where:

  • G – gallery collection; n = {1,2,3,4,5}.
  • T – tissue class, category (n), sub-category (m), and subsub-category (k); (n.m.k) as determined by the gallery G1 index; for galleries G2-G5, the notation Tp-q-,… means a multiplicity of p, q, …, where p, q, … are component tissue classes or sub-classes as specified in the corresponding indices.
  • V – view; n = {1 A (anterior), 2 L (left), 3 P (posterior), 4 R (right), 5 S (superior), 6 I (inferior), 7 (and higher) arbitrary}.
  • C – color; n = {1 mono-color, 2-4 multi-color, 2 l (lobes), 3 g (gyri), 4 gs (gyri and sulci), 5 RGB (for white matter tracts); for galleries G2-G5 the order of colors Cn1-n2 … is according to that of the (sub-)categories.
  • S – special case, optionally; n = {0 none, 1 brain cut, 2 coordinate system}.
  • L – label; n = {0 unlabeled, 1 labeled (standard), 2 (and higher) extra labels}.
  • text – anatomic image (name (including category and sub(sub)-category) as specified in the image list.

For surface–(tri)planer anatomic gallery G6, file name syntax is G6.Tm.Vn.Pcoord for planar and G6.Tm.Vn.PcoordS for the combined surface with planar images, where “coords” are axial, coronal, and/or sagittal coordinates in millimeters. The center of the stereotactic coordinate system corresponds to the center of the anterior commissure and the signs of the coordinates are: dorsal “+” and ventral “-” for axial, rostral “+” and caudal “-” for coronal, and left (hemisphere) “+” and right (hemisphere) “-” for sagittal orientations.

For dissection anatomic gallery G7, file name syntax is G7.Tn-m.Vn.Dxcoord.Cn.Ln.text, where "G7.Tn-m.Vn" are as above, "x" denotes the dissection direction (x = {a – anterior, l – left, p – posterior, r – right, s - superior, i – inferior}) and "coord" coordinates of the cutting plane in millimeters.

For brain function gallery G10, the image naming is G10.BrainFunction.text, where “text” is the name of the structure or system whose function is described.

For neurologic disorder gallery G11, the image naming is G11.DisorderGroup.text, where “text” is the name of the structure and type of its damage (lesion, occlusion, aneurysm, thrombus).

For special theme and artistic gallery G12, the image naming is G10.theme.text, where “text” is an arbitrary image name, not related to its view nor tissue classes.
